“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” Psalm 23:1

Ever feel like you just can’t get enough? Afterall, more is better than less. Bigger is better than small. New is better than old. Or is it?

You get that raise, that house, or that promotion. You achieve that goal or win that prize. But there’s that ever present feeling deep down inside that says, “Is that it?”

Even Tom Brady, after winning one of his 7 Super Bowls, said, “Why do I still think there’s something greater out there for me? I mean, maybe a lot of people would say, “Hey man, this is what is.” I reached my goal, my dream, my life. Me, I think: God, it’s gotta be more than this. I mean this can’t be what it’s all cracked up to be. I mean I’ve done it. What else is there for me?”

Theologian C.S. Lewis says, “If I find in myself desires which nothing in this world can satisfy, the only logical explanation is that I was made for another world.”

Truth.

If God is our Creator, we are His creatures. He is the master inventor and we are His inventions. He handcrafted each of us. We are hardwired to only find satisfaction and fulfillment and contentment in Him.

King David reminds us that all we need and ever could want is found in God, our shepherd. When we choose to follow Him, we lack nothing! How beautiful is that? The rat race is over. The neverending pursuit of “more” is dead to us.

So today let’s all take a deep collective breath. Let’s admit we can be dumb sheep sometimes, easily led astray by the empty promises of this world.

Let’s be still and quiet and listen to that still small voice of our Shepherd who says, “Follow me my child. Trust me. I have all you need.”

Prayer: God, you are my shepherd. No one and nothing else can satisfy my longings. Thank you for welcoming me back with open arms. Thank you for knowing what I need. Help me to trust you with every detail of my life. Amen.
